Title: Building for the Future – The
Rebuilding of Iraq
Speaker: COLONEL
VINCENT (VINCE) M. SARONI, P.E.
Serving as Deputy Commanding Officer for the U.S. Army Corps
of Engineers’ Gulf Region Division, one of five Army Divisions in Iraq in 2008,
Col Vince Saroni shares his insights and perspective on how General Petraeus
weaved together Security, Construction and Reconciliation to build for the
future.
Bio:
Colonel Vincent M. Saroni entered the Air Force in
June 1983 upon receiving his degree in Civil Engineering from the U.S. Air
Force Academy. He served in active duty
assignments in Texas, Saudi Arabia and Nebraska,
and then joined the Air Force Reserves, completing engineering assessments in Saudi Arabia, Oman,
Kuwait, Turkey, Germany,
Italy and Panama. The day
after 11 September 2001, Colonel Saroni reported for duty and subsequently was
activated for one year as the lead command engineer
for antiterrorism/force protection initiatives. He currently serves as the
Mobilization Assistant to the Air Force Civil Engineer at the Pentagon.
In
December 2007, the Air Force Civil Engineer selected Colonel Saroni as the
first Airman to ever lead the Army’s Gulf Region Division (GRD), International
Zone, Baghdad, Iraq. As GRD’s Deputy Commanding Officer, he ensured
the safety and security of more than 4,000 personnel in the U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers’ largest program – over $14B to reconstruct Iraq. He returned home in September 2008, having
earned the Bronze Star for his leadership in combat.
In civilian life Colonel Saroni works as a
licensed professional engineer and as a consultant. Colonel
Saroni is married with five children and lives near Dallas, Texas. He serves as an elder in his church and
continues his commitment as an Eagle Scout by serving as an assistant
Scoutmaster in his sons’ Boy Scout troop.
